Downtown Colfax looks much the same as it did at the turn of the
century (without the horses of course.) The downtown district and
neighborhoods of stately homes have retained the area's 19th century
charm. Colfax boasts a beautifully restored movie theater, a small
strip mall, community sports field and modern school campuses.
Tourists and townspeople alike enjoy the unique shops and restaurants.
Colfax likes to refer to itself as "The Gateway to the Sierras".
With plenty of recreational activities available (two parks, numerous
trails for horses, bikes, and hiking; fishing in streams and lakes;
camping, whitewater rafting, swimming, water-skiing on Rollins Lake; and
recreational gold panning on the Bear River) there is always enough to do
in the great outdoors.
The population within the city limits is around 1,500; however, Colfax
is the hub of the unincorporated region that surrounds it. This town
continues to offer the quite foothill living that so many are looking for
today.
